New York blast an 'act of terror', governor says

A bomb went off on Saturday night in New York’s vibrant neighbourhood of Chelsea. 29 people were injured in the explosion that occured shortly before a second suspicious device was found nearby. Meanwhile, the police presence was beefed up on Monday in the city, which will be hosting world leaders for a UN summit on refugees.

The Governor of New York state, Andrew Cuomo refered to the blast as a “terrorist act.” He however stressed that there were no proven links with any international terror organization. Officials are questioning a number of people in relation to the blast.

Investigators believe the blast was caused by an explosive device, which was found to be a pressure cooker with dark colored wiring protruding, connected by silver duct tape to what appears to be a cellphone. They are investigating a surveillance video that appears to show a person near where the explosion occurred, in an attempt to determine if the individual is connected to the blast.
